Karwon Composites supplies the tube and rod used in UAV booms, arms and airframe members.
For UAV airframes, carbon fibre tubes and rods give the best stiffness for the weight, which is exactly what a flying structure needs. As a practical starting point: use roll-wrapped tubes for arms that bend and twist, pultruded rods and tubes for straight members loaded along their length, and a T700-class fibre as the default, moving to high-modulus only where a part must not flex.
Why carbon fibre suits UAVs
In flight, every gram costs endurance, and any flex in the frame throws off motor alignment and adds vibration. Carbon fibre carries far more stiffness per unit of weight than aluminium, which is why it dominates serious airframe design. The goal is to put stiffness exactly where the loads are, without carrying weight where they are not.
Arms and booms
Arms and booms see the most varied load. A motor at the end of an arm creates bending, and manoeuvres add torsion. That points to roll-wrapped tubes, where the layup can be balanced to resist bending and twist at once. Round tubes are light and simple, while square tubes make mounting and clamping easier, so the choice often comes down to how you attach hardware.
Frame members and standoffs
Straight structural members, standoffs and links are loaded mostly along their axis, so pultruded rods and tubes are efficient and economical there. Frame plates are usually cut from carbon sheet in a balanced layup, which keeps the plate stiff in every direction across its face.
Choosing a grade
T700 is the sensible default for most UAV structure. It combines high strength with enough toughness to survive the knocks and hard landings that airframes take. Reserve high-modulus grades for places where deflection is the real problem, such as a long camera boom or a member that must stay perfectly straight, and remember that the extra stiffness comes with more brittleness.
The weight versus stiffness trade
A useful rule when sizing tubes: a larger diameter with a thinner wall is often stiffer per unit of weight than a smaller, thicker one. Within reason, going up in diameter and down in wall can buy you stiffness for very little weight, as long as the wall stays thick enough to resist local crushing at clamps and joints.
Sourcing for UAV builds in the UAE
The UAE has a fast-growing UAV and defence sector, and lead time is often the constraint on a build. Karwon supplies carbon fibre tubes and rods suited to airframe work, with short lead times, and documentation requirements agreed at quotation stage.
